What are Technical Classes?

Technical Classes at Studio One (DCPA) are where the students study their main core disciplines; Classical Ballet, Tap & Modern Jazz. These are the foundations of a students dance training and ensures that upon completion of their examinations, students will be a well rounded dancer/performer with a strong knowledge in all three disciplines. There are 8 stages to our Technical Classes, these are outlined below in more detail…
Nursery Class

Nursery Class

An introduction to dance for students aged 2,3 & 4yrs. The fifty minute class is a step up from our Pre-School Classes – offering a basic introduction to our Class Structure covering Ballet, Tap, Modern, Singing & First Stage Acrobatics. One Qualified Class Teacher and four Class Assistants are present at all times – offering smaller children the individual attention they so often require. Children progress to Class 1 between 4 and 41/2 yrs.

Every year, Nursery Students have the opportunity to complete a Medal Test in Ballet & Tap and perform in our Annual Production at Pavilion Dance South West, Bournemouth!

Class One

Class One

Class One is the first stage of Structured Graded Classes at Studio One. Students study Ballet, Tap, Jazz & Acrobatics and will receive the highest standard of training to enable them to take their first examinations.

The level that the students study is Pre-Primary/Preparatory, and upon completion of these 4 examinations, students will progress into Class 2.

Class One is 1.5 hours in duration. Due to the popularity and number of students in this group, it is currently split into Class 1a & Class 1b.

Class Two

Class Two

Class Two students work at a Primary Level, studying Ballet, Tap & Modern/Jazz.

At this stage Acrobatics becomes an optional class should the student wish to continue after their introduction to the discipline in Class One.

Class Two is 1.5 hours in duration with the option of a 30 minute Acrobatics class that follows.

Class Three

Class Three

Class Three students work at a Grade One & Two level, studying Ballet, Tap & Modern/Jazz.

Students are required complete all levels of examinations in all disciplines before progressing into Class Four.

The class is 2 hours in duration with an optional 45 minute Acrobatics class that follows.

Class Four

Class Four

Class Four students work at a Grade Three & Four level, studying Ballet, Tap & Modern/Jazz.

Students are required complete all levels of examinations in all disciplines before progressing into Class Five.

The class is 2 hours in duration with an optional 45 minute Acrobatics class that follows.

Class Five

Class Five

Class Five students work at a Grade Five & Six level, studying Ballet, Tap & Modern/Jazz.

At this stage female Students are considered and assessed for beginning Pointe Work within their Ballet training. Also, students have the opportunity to experience creating their own choreography for examinations.

The students are encouraged to really research into various styles of dance, which broadens their dance knowledge.

Students are required complete all levels of examinations in all disciplines before progressing into Class Six.

The class is 2hrs 15mins in duration with an optional 45 minute Acrobatics class that follows.

Class Six

Class Six

Class Six students work at an Intermediate/Advanced Foundation & Grade 7 level, studying Ballet, Tap & Modern/Jazz.

At this stage all students begin their Vocational Examinations whereby all dancers are required to produce a written journal for each examination. During these examinations the students are interviewed by the examiner and will have to discuss their work and research in detail.

The students are encouraged to really research into various styles of dance, different cultures, various music, productions and shows!

Students are required complete all levels of examinations in all disciplines before progressing into Class Seven.

The class is 2hrs 15mins in duration with an optional 1 hour Acrobatics class.

Class Seven

Class Seven

Class Seven students work at an Advanced One, Advanced Two, Diploma & Grade 8 level, studying Ballet, Tap & Modern/Jazz.

At this stage students are nearing the end of their examinations where they will continue to produce written journals for their Vocational exams. During these examinations the students are interviewed by the examiner and will have to discuss their work and research in detail.

The students are encouraged to really research into various styles of dance, different cultures, various music, productions and shows! Students who wish to pursue a career in Dance or Theatre are guided by our Teachers through the audition process as they prepare for further education at professional colleges and univeristies.

Students are required complete all levels of examinations in all disciplines before graduating from the school at the age of 18.

The class is 2hrs 15mins in duration with an optional 1 hour Acrobatics class.
